Where: Highway 85 near mile marker 178, approximately 5 miles south of Williston, ND  

When: March 10, 2023, at approximately 0638 PM CST  

Road Conditions: Icy, blowing snow – no travel advisory. 

 Weather Conditions: Snow, high winds  

Crash Involvement: Pickup vs Semi  

Type of Crash: Angle  

Agencies Involved: North Dakota Highway Patrol, McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office, Williston Rural Fire Department, Williston Fire EMS  

Vehicle No. 1: 2018 Ford F-350  

Driver No. 1: : Bona Son, 29 year old Male, Watford City, ND - Fatal

 Restraints: Not in use  

Vehicle No. 2: 2014 Western Star Truck  

Driver No. 2:

Kenneth Schafer, 67 year old male, Bridger, MT – serious non-life
threatening

Restraints: Unknown  

NARRATIVE: The Western Star Truck hauling a pneumatic sand trailer was traveling north on Hwy 85 near mile marker 178. The Ford was traveling south on Hwy 85. The Ford lost control, crossed into the northbound lanes. The Ford and Western Star Truck collided. The driver of the Ford was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the Western Star Truck was transported to CHI St Alexius in Williston. The driver suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The road conditions were icy at the time of the crash and the area was in a no travel advisory. The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol
