Ward County Injury Crash - UPDATE 

What: Two vehicle injury crash 

Where: Highway 52 mile marker 73, 5 miles east of Carpio 

When: 11/15/2022 approximately 4:10 PM CST 

Road Conditions: Dry 

Weather Conditions: Overcast 

Crash Involvement: Two vehicle crossover SUV vs. school bus 

Type of Crash: Right angle 

Agencies Involved: NDHP, Ward County Sheriff’s Office, Caprio Fire Department, Burlington 

Fire Department, Berthold Ambulance Service, Trinity First Response Ambulance, Stanley 

Ambulance 

Vehicle No. 1: 2018 Ford Edge 

Driver No. 1: Carmie Nelson, 89 years old, Kenmare, ND, Serious Injury 

Restraints: Unknown 

Charges: None 

Passenger No. 1: Helen Nelson, 90 years old, Kenmare, ND, Serious Injury 

Restraints: Unknown 

Vehicle No. 2: 2005 Bluebird (school bus) 

Driver No. 2: Janice Feickert, 77 years old, Berthold, ND, Uninjured 

Restraints: Seat Belt 

Charges: Pending 

NARRATIVE: A school bus belonging to Lewis and Clark School District carrying seven 

juvenile students was traveling northbound on 209th St NW in Ward County. The bus stopped 

at the intersection with Highway 52 before continuing through the intersection. The bus failed 

to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck by a Ford Edge that was traveling westbound on Highway 52. All students on the bus were uninjured. Carmie and Helen Nelson sustained serious injuries and were transported via ambulance to Trinity Health in Minot. The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
