MINOT—The Rinat Mouzafarov Institute of Dance & Ballet Theater has been preparing for the ballet The Nutcracker for several months and is now ready to give the world a show.
Rinat Mouzafarov, the choreographer of the show, has accomplished 12 different ballets of The Nutcracker, starting in 1996, not long after he moved from Russia to the United States. This year, he has added two more numbers, as well as other unconventional choreography.
“This performance has a lot of unique choreography compared to traditional Nutcracker. [Mouzafarov] brings his own flare and his own style, and to me it makes it stand out,” said Nicholas Mesa, who plays the role of the Nutcracker Prince and Father Stahlbaum.
“I’ve been in New York, I’ve been in Oklahoma. I never see this dance,” said Mouzafarov, of the new choreography.
Most of Mouzafarov’s cast of The Nutcracker has been practicing since October, some roles requiring more work than others. Overall, they have mostly practiced every day. “It’s really tough in the practice days, but so far it’s been really good. All the dancers have been working really hard,” said Tayler Christianson, dancer in the first act for the role of Clara.
“[Dancing] helps me get my emotions out,” said Alaina Gochanour, dancer in the second act for the role of Clara.
Though having two dancers for the role of Clara might seem difficult, Christianson explains how they make it work. “We have the same hair, the same bow, same dresses.” Christianson and Gochanour each said they have been dancing since they were about 3 years old.
Mesa, also dancing for the role of Father Stahlbaum, is from Yuma, Arizona, and came to Minot for rehearsal on Dec. 14. Though this is his first time performing for Mouzafarov, he has known him for over 20 years. Jarod Mesa, Nicholas’ brother, danced for Mouzafarov last spring. Mesa described his enthusiasm for Mouzafarov's The Nutcracker, “It’s very special to be able to dance with Mr. Rinat and both Claras.”
“He’s an amazing part,” said Mouzafarov. “[They’re all] amazing dancers.”
Tickets for the show can be purchased at Artmain, Eckroth Music, and also at the door of Ann Nicole Nelson Hall. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children. “Very good prices,” said Mesa. “The average Nutcracker price is $25 to $30, and that’s low.”
“This is what I wanted,” said Mouzafarov. “You know, everything is so expensive.” He said the drops and costumes are all new.
The first show is on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 7pm. The second is on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 1pm. Doors for both will open one hour prior to the show.
