Annual Event for ND Birders

UPPER SOURIS NWR—Binoculars in one hand and a coverage map in the other, several avid birders began their Christmas Bird Count shortly after first light Friday.

The annual events are conducted throughout the United States, including all across North Dakota, under the auspices of the Audubon Society. The purpose is to provide data on bird populations. Beginning in 1900, the Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science survey in the world.

At Upper Souris NWR, which encompasses Lake Darling, volunteers were assigned areas, or circles, to observe. All birds sighted, and their numbers, are documented.

Weather can influence bird watching. Too much wind or cold keeps many birds tucked into cover and makes them less likely to be sighted and included in survey results. Weather conditions are included in all survey reports.

Experienced and novice birders are always welcome to participate in Christmas Bird Counts. Several counts remain on the calendar. They include:

Garrison Dam – December 18

Bismarck – December 19

Minot – December 26

Denbigh – January 1

Medora – January 2

People interested in taking part in the Minot Christmas Bird Count are asked to meet at McDonalds on Broadway at 7:45 a.m. Dec. 26. New birders will be paired with an experienced birder if desired. Additionally, anyone with a bird feeder is encouraged to report their sightings.
