The Dakotan: This is Outdoor Issues with Niel Roberts and North Dakota Game and Fish outreach biologist Greg Gullickson. Neil Roberts: With the summer fishing season in full swing, a ton of great opportunities across the state. Greg I finally got out and I fish the upper section of the cockle wheel with a good buddy and it doesn't happen often, but we actually got out a little bit of all I and it was fun getting out. I know you've been out several times as well. Greg Gullickson: Yeah, this time of the year, you know, usually in the spring we do have a pretty good walleye bite going. Don't overlook a lot of these other species that we have. I mean, northern pike are great table fare. They fight really good perch, smallmouth bass channel, catfish. There's just a lot of great opportunities. And Skagway is obviously this shining gem in North Dakota, but there's some of those lakes that are right in your own backyard and you don't need a boat to get out and enjoy fishing in North Dakota. A lot of great shore fishing opportunities, a lot of fishing, Piers, to get you access a little bit farther out in the lake so you can get casting, pass that weed bed and all that information is available on the Gaming Fish Department website. So you can do a little bit of research even before you watch that line. Neil Roberts: Good stuff, Greg. Hey, we'll have more on fishing when we come back. I went out on a Monday, a little less traffic, but still a lot of boats out there. Greg Gullickson: Yeah, absolutely. And especially when we head into the weekends and holiday weekends, we see a lot of congestion, especially at those boat ramps. And there's a lot of things to remember, especially with those first couple trips out there. And you're kind of dusting off that boat hasn't been in the water for four to five months or longer. Don't forget to put that plug in, take those straps off between the trailer in the boat. And I'm guilty of both of those right back the boat in and hook up. It's not coming off the trailer. All of a sudden, you start fishing you notice water coming up in the back of the boat. If you happen to see a situation at a boat ramp, help those other people out.
