South Prairie Makes Statement at Nationals

Trapshooters Advance to Finals 

MASON, MICHIGAN – The South Prairie Royals high school clay target team opened national competition Friday with a 7th place performance in a 240-team field comprised of high school clay target competitors from throughout the United States. The strong showing earned the Royals a place in the national finals Sunday. 

South Prairie opened the day with their five-man squad breaking 243 of 250 targets, third best in the nation at the half-way point. The Royals slipped a bit in the second round, posting a 237 of 250 for a total of 480/500, 12 targets fewer than their state championship effort a few weeks ago. Calhoun High School of Illinois led the team qualifying with an outstanding 494/500. 

The top 80 teams Friday earned a berth in Sunday’s finals. Only Sunday’s scores will be used to determine the final standings. 

Two other North Dakota teams also advanced to the final round. Berthold posted a 469/500 to finish 53rd. Williston had a 467/500, good enough for 66th

Today’s weather was excellent for shooting with little to no wind. There is a 70% chance of rain Saturday when the individual shooting is scheduled.
