Incident Leads to Temporary Closure

MINOT – Roosevelt Park swimming pool remained closed Thursday following a near drowning incident there the previous afternoon.

Minot Police say a six-year-old boy was found unresponsive in the pool about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. First responders immediately began CPR. The boy was transferred to Trinity Hospital and later to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. According to various reports, the boy is successfully recovering from the incident.

Capt. Dale Plessas, Minot Police, said an investigation into the matter was conducted.

“We took information from people who witnessed it,” said Plesass. “We do an informational report on anything like that. The reason is, one, it occurred on city property, so, if the city needs any information in the future, they have it available to them.

The second is, if there is any allegation ever made, we are ready to go. In this case there’s no indication of an allegation. It’s not criminal.”

According to a post on the Minot Parks Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, the pool was to remain closed Thursday, June 8. According to Minot Parks Director Ellie DesLauriers, when the pool will reopen is yet to be determined.

"We wanted to close Thursday out of respect for the patron and the family and have a day for our lifeguards to kind of process the incident," said DesLauriers. "Then we will decide further Friday morning and let people know when we will be opening."
