BISMARCK – The North Dakota State Senate passed a bill to make curling the official state sport Friday, filling the chambers with sports jokes and laughter.
Senate Bill 2229, which would make curling the state’s official sport, passed by a vote of 30 to 17.
The bill carrier, Senator Michelle Axtman, R-Dis. 7, Bismarck, said 17 states have official state sports, but none are curling.
“Curling has a rich history in our state,” said Axtman. “The first curling club was founded in Drayton in 1901, and the sport has continued to grow in popularity across the state. We now have 11 different curling clubs, which is the most per capita across the nation.”
Some Senators, though understanding the bill is lighthearted, voiced opposition saying if something is going to be put into law, it should be taken seriously.
The bill will be moved to the House after the crossover date of February 24 for further consideration.
