City Traffic Engineer

MINOT – Traffic can be annoying, but there’s always someone working in the background to help it flow.

Stephen Joersz has been the Minot city traffic engineer since 2018. He said his mom’s side of the family is from Minot.

“I’ve been here on and off growing up,” said Joersz.

Joersz grew up in Washburn and moved to Minot in October of 2018.

Joersz described the traffic engineering job as a little bit of everything.

“I like to say I have my fingertips in a lot of pots,” said Joersz. “I get roped in on construction projects, from traffic control perspective, signal signs, traffic studies like Fourth Avenue, we’ve revamped the city’s signal timing in the past two years.”

Joersz is also involved in capital improvement items, and he oversees five main staff.

“We’re in charge of all of our stop signs, and signs in general, street markers,” said Joersz. “Everything but the actual road. Traffic signals, street lighting, and pavement markings.”

Joersz said he is not in charge of snow removal but he does work with those who are in charge of it.

Joersz explained what he likes to do for fun.

“I have a four year old at home, so free time is limited,” Joersz laughed. “He loves his dad so it’s a lot of work. We read bedtime stories. For free time, I like playing cards, playing golf.”
