Extends Deer Season for Pre-Teens

BISMARCK – Young deer hunters may be given a longer hunting season due to the North Dakota State Senate’s vote Tuesday.

House Bill 1233, on line 18, would remove the wording that says 11, 12, and 13-year-olds may only hunt deer during youth hunting season. The bill would allow youth to hunt deer during the regular deer hunting season. The bill applies to white-tailed antlerless deer only.

“During the fall when the youth deer hunting is on, then there’s a lot of standing crops, and people are having a hard time finding deer to hunt,” said Sen. Jeff Magrum, R-Dis. 8, Hazelton. “This would extend the season for the youth and give them more field time, and hopefully they’ll harvest a deer.”

The bill passed by a vote of 45 to 0 and will be sent to the governor’s desk for consideration.
