ROLLA – A man wanted for a AA felony murder charge was captured in Eddy County on Wednesday.
The Rolette County Sheriff’s Office announced the apprehension on social media with a brief statement: “Nicholas Poitra has been appended by law enforcement. Thank you for all your help.”
Poitra, 34, Rolla, is facing 10 charges stemming from a fatal incident in the Sheyenne Bar in Sheyenne, at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday, February 19. According to an affidavit in support of probable cause filed in Southeast District Court, Poitra exchanged words with another man seated at the bar before shooting him.
When law enforcement arrived Poitra, identified by witnesses in the bar, had fled the scene. The victim was declared dead by first responders with the cause being a gunshot wound to the head. The weapon used was described by witnesses as a “short-barreled shotgun.
In addition to the murder charge, Poitra is charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm-Felon or violent misdemeanor, seven counts of Terrorizing-With a dangerous weapon, and Robbery-With a firearm, dangerous weapon or destructive device.
Poitra is being held in Devils Lake. He has a bond hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. today, Feb. 23.
