MINOT — The ongoing flood protection project has earned more national recognition.

Phase 1 of the Mouse River Enhanced Flood Protection Plan received the 2021 Crown Communities Award from American City & County, a national organization dedicated to recognizing public projects and servants that have a substantial impact on constituents. Phases 2 and 3 earned a similar award last year.

“It’s an honor for me to be involved in a project of this magnitude because there are so many agencies and partners working together to provide protection for the Souris River basin,” said Dan Jonasson, director of Public Works for the City of Minot and a director for the Souris River Joint Board. “Phase 1 was a vital part of the entire project, and I’m happy to see the hard work and cooperation recognized.”

The City of Minot collaborates with many partners on the overall project, including the Souris River Joint Board, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Emergency Management Administration, the North Dakota State Water Commission, the Minot Park District, and the Ward County Water Board, as well as elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels.

The roughly $43 million Phase1 created new concrete floodwalls and other components, including approximately 3,000 feet of new roadway, 45,000 cubic yards of dirt, a new 190,000 gallon per minute pump station, a 40,000 gallon per minute sanitary lift station, and 18,000 feet of utility reconstruction.
