Minot- Tuesday, June 3 saw a special election in Minot take place to potentially increase the city's sales tax by a half percent to 8. However, Minoters shot it down by just 25 votes.

With a total of 1,933 votes cast, Minot sees yet another election with exceptionally low turnout. With roughly 37,000 eligible voters, this is a turnout of less than 6 percent.

The election saw 954 vote for and 979 people vote against meaning the status quo will remain in Minot. The vote would have given the increase to the Minot Park District to fund a new indoor facility and to pay for recurring expenses in exchange for a 40% reduction in park district property taxes. This would have lasted 20 years before being revisited or the property taxes rolling back to their prior number.

With this decision made, Minot now pivots into full election mode for the remaining term for Mayor on August 5th.

The Dakotan will be hosting a mayoral debate June 17th at 6pm at the Mouse River Players Theater in Downtown Minot.
