Minot, ND – Independence, Inc. is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 Advocate of the Year and Youth Awards, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the community and championed the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities. This year, at the 2024 Sound of Independence Event in downtown Minot, we are proud to recognize Sergeant Jared Foley as Advocate of the Year and Elizabeth Romanick as Youth Advocate of the Year.

Sergeant Jared Foley – Advocate of the Year

Sergeant Jared Foley has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advocating for individuals with disabilities through his role at the Minot Police Department. He has been instrumental in implementing initiatives that promote the integration of individuals with disabilities into the community while reducing their involvement in the criminal justice system. Through his leadership, the Minot Police Department received training from Independence, Inc., ensuring that all officers are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to support individuals with disabilities effectively.

As a key player in the Crisis Intervention Team, Sergeant Foley has dedicated himself to enhancing the response to mental health crises. His tireless efforts in training local first responders in de-escalation techniques have resulted in safer and more compassionate interactions during these critical situations. His initiatives have significantly impacted both the police force and the community, fostering an environment of understanding and support for individuals with disabilities and those experiencing mental health challenges.

In addition to his work with the Minot Police Department, Sergeant Foley presented to the North Dakota Statewide Independent Living Council, providing a model for other Centers for Independent Living to partner with their local police departments in keeping people living within the community. His innovative approach and dedication have set a standard for collaboration between law enforcement and community organizations.

Sergeant Foley has also collaborated with the staff at Independence, Inc. to establish internal office safety procedures, ensuring a secure environment for everyone working at the organization. His commitment to safety and inclusivity is evident in every aspect of his work.

Elizabeth Romanick – Youth Advocate of the Year

Elizabeth Romanick has been named the Youth Advocate of the Year for her remarkable dedication and passion for advocating for individuals with disabilities. Liz is motivated to be a change-maker and has made a significant impact through her advocacy work. Previously a member of the YESS group in Bismarck, where she played a key role in the leadership group, Liz is now working to establish a youth leadership group in Minot in partnership with Independence, Inc. She has also participated in the Minot Advocates Living Lives Group.

A graduate of Dakota College Bottineau with an associate's degree in Paraprofessional Education, Liz is currently working at Minot State University as an Ability Expert at NDCPD. She is actively involved with the ASTEP and IMPCCT Teams and works with the Core Team on disability awareness.
