First for City of Minot

MINOT – The city’s first pickup of carts containing recyclables happened Monday for those residents on the Monday-Thursday garbage collection schedule. Residents with Tuesday-Friday garbage pickup began their recycling experience Tuesday, July 18.

So far, so good, says Christina Wolf, recycling coordinator.

“It is going as expected. The load has been pretty good and not much contamination,” said Wolf.

City residents can choose not to participate in recycling but, to date, less than 10% have done so. Monday’s first collection of recycling carts yielded nearly 16 tons of recyclable materials.

“That is about 70% of our first trailer to be sent over to Shakopee, Minnesota,” said Wolf. “It’s about what we were projecting.”

Wolf says how often semi-trailer loads of recyclables will be shipped to Shakopee for processing will become clearer a few weeks into the program. Early estimates project weekly loads being trucked out of the city.

Some residents placed both their recycling carts and regular garbage carts out for pickup this past Monday, apparently unaware that recycling replaces garbage pickup once every two weeks. Wolf reminds citizens that “only recycling carts” will be picked up on the days devoted to recycling.
