MINOT – A bill to provide property tax relief passed the State Senate 45-1 and now moves on the House for further consideration.

Senate Majority Leader David Hogue, R-Dis. 38, Minot, told those attending a legislative forum in Minot that the bill was one of six that passed in the Senate.

SB2136 would substantially change the way property tax is charged to the state’s senior citizens, those 65 of age or older.

“It will pay property tax for amounts under $200,000 property valuation, if a person is over 65 and has less than $100,000 income,” said Hogue.

Hogue also said the Senate supports a $220 million buy down of school district mill levies in the state in an effort to check rising property taxes.

The crossover date for the State Legislature is Friday, February 24. At that time all bills passed by either legislative body are forwarded to the other for further action before possibly becoming law.
