EDMOND, Okla. – After a pair of wins over Top-10 foes, the Minot State men’s hockey team wrapped up a successful weekend at the Battle at the Edge hosted by Central Oklahoma by skating away from Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers opened the scoring with 4 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first period on a power-play goal by Joey Moffatt off assists from Reid Arnold and Jay Buchholz, but the Sooners evened the score just 28 seconds later and it stayed tied 1-1 into the second.
Carter Barley struck with 6:31 gone in the second period, netting the eventual game-winner off assists from Eric Soar and Drew Carter, then Minot State never looked back.
Though the score remained close the rest of the second stanza, just 21 seconds into the final period the Beavers (21-1-0 overall) began breaking it open as Sheldin Howard scored an unassisted goal, his first of back-to-back goals.
Howard’s second came off assists from Moffatt and Buchholz, then Reece Henry added another goal for the Beavers to help ice the win, off assists from Arnold and Josh Pederson.
Riley Wallace finished with 18 saves in goal for Minot State, which outshot Oklahoma 47-19.
The Beavers now return to North Dakota for a game at Jamestown on Friday night, closing a stretch of 6-of-7 on the road, then Minot State hosts Mary at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, and Dakota College of Bottineau on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m.
