MINOT — Members of the District 3 Republican Party endorsed three candidates for the state legislature on Monday night.
With former Senator Oley Larsen having stepped down, Bob Paulson, previously a representative, was unanimously endorsed with a voice vote for the Senate seat.
For the two House of Representatives seats, Lori VanWinkle, an at large member of the District 3 Republican Committee, and Jeff Hoverson, an incumbent in the position, were endorsed by paper ballot.
“I don’t just talk about stuff, I become the change,” said VanWinkle, in her speech.
Roscoe Streyle, a former representative and chairman of District 3, was also nominated, but did not receive the endorsement.
The meeting had around 80 people in attendance, with 53 ballots cast.
The executive committee asked three questions of every candidate.
The first one was a question on whether the candidates would “honor the results of this endorsing convention and not run in the primary if [the candidate questioned] does not win the endorsement.”
The second one stated, “Do you agree to keep the principles of the 3rd District Republican Party, as listed on our membership application, as a guide to your voting in the legislature?”
The third one read, “To help protect the separation of powers, do you agree not to accept any money from the governor’s campaign or from any PAC (Political Action Committee) associated with the governor?”
