COLEHARBOR – It's free and an excellent way to get outdoors and enjoy some wintertime exercise.

The Friends of Lake Audubon National Wildlife Refuge and the North Country Trail Association’s Central Flyway Chapter are sponsoring a guided hike on December 9 at 2 p.m. and self-guided hikes Dec. 20-Jan.1, 2022. All the hikes will be at Audubon NWR, located a short distance north of here.

The hikes are two miles long, traversing both the refuge’s Prairie Nature Trail and new sections of the North Country Trail. In its entirety, the NCT stretches over 4,600 miles from Vermont to Lake Sakakawea State Park. Trail surfaces at Audubon NWR are a combination of concrete, grass, and gravel.

The chosen hiking trail at Audubon NWR will be well marked with signs depicting the 12 Days of Christmas and other holiday traditions. All hikes begin at the refuge Visitor’s Center.

Features on this year’s trail include a Santa and his reindeer selfie station and a bird friendly Christmas tree. Hikers are encouraged to bring a bird friendly ornament to place on the tree. Suggestions for decorations, as well as updates on trail conditions, can be found on Facebook at NCTA Central Flyway Chapter or Audubon Refuge Partners.
