Tax Bills Moved Forward

4:35 p.m., Nov. 10--Two tax bills were taken up by the Joint Technical Corrections Committee (JTCC) this afternoon.

FIrst, SB 2351 which would eliminate state income tax on Social Security income. That measure was moved forward with a Do Pass recommendation to the full houses. The vote was 15-1. There was a suggested amendment to add a sunset clause so that the permanent version could be taken up in the next full session, but that amendment did not pass.

Next, HB 1515 was taken up. The final version that moved forward to the full chambers without a committee recommendation of either sort would offer a one-time $350 tax credit to tax filers in the state. Some considerations had to do with how much to offer, whether or not there would be a marriage penalty, and whether it would be better to create full-scale tax relief in the next biennium. This is likely to be heavily debated again in both chambers, with all the different issues that came up in the committee itself.
