The Ward County Emergency Management Team strongly encourages all residents to clearly and properly display their correct address number on their residential or business structure as well as their mailbox.
Our goal at Ward County Emergency Management is to ensure Emergency Responders can get to you when you need them as quickly, efficiently, and safely as possible. By marking your residence or business correctly, you can help us achieve that goal.
This is extremely important during an emergency response, especially during hours of darkness or inclement weather. Not having your residence or business marked correctly, clearly, or properly could result in a delayed response time when seconds matter the most.
Although technology advancements and mapping systems have greatly aided Emergency Responders, a clearly marked house or business remains one of the best ways to quickly determine if they are at the correct address.
Additionally, other entities such as package delivery service providers will greatly benefit from your residence being marked appropriately.
The North Dakota State Building Code has adopted the International Residential Code Section R319.1 which states:
“Buildings shall have approved address numbers or approved building identification placed in a position that is plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property. These numbers shall contrast with their background. Address numbers shall be Arabic numbers or alphabetical letters. Numbers shall be a minimum of 4 inches high with a minimum stroke width of ½ inch. Where access is by means of a private road and the building address cannot be viewed from the public way, a monument, pole or other sign or means shall be used to identify the structure”.
