BISMARCK – The North Dakota State House failed to override a pair of bills vetoed by Gov. Doug Burgum.
Senate Bill 2231 sought to prohibit a government entity from mandating a teacher use the preferred pronouns of a student. The bill also prohibits public schools from adopting policies or instructions regarding expressed gender unless required by federal law, though the school would still need to seek approval from the guardians of a specific student concerning their expressed gender.
SB2231 passed the Senate 37-9, more than the two thirds vote necessary to override the veto, but the House failed to override the veto 56-36.
The House also failed to override the governor’s veto of House Bill 1475 which would have changed the speed limit on some portions of North Dakota’s interstates from 75 miles an hour to 80 miles an hour. The bill would have maintained exceptions in areas the Department of Transportation deems necessary. The bill failed by a vote of 58 to 34.
