MINOT, N.D. -- Cam'ron Dunfee led the way in Minot State's 3-point barrage as the Beavers shot 54.2 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 96-74 victory over the Saint Cloud State Huskies at home Saturday in NSIC action.
Dunfee tied an NCAA Division II-era school record with 8 threes in the contest, matching the record set by Russ Davis, who did it on Dec. 17, 2016 against the University of Mary, and Dominique McDonald who had 8 threes against Minnesota State, Mankato on Feb. 1, 2014.
The Beavers (5-4 overall, 2-3 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Dunfee who had 28 points and three steals. Jalen Cook tacked on 22 points off the bench and Khari Broadway chipped in as well with 11 points.
Minot State grabbed 36 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Saint Cloud State's 32, led by six boards from Connor Hollenbeck. The Beavers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 10 rebounds into 10 second-chance points.
The Minot State defense created a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 17 Saint Cloud State turnovers while the Beavers committed eight. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Michael Jok's four steals led the way individually for the Beavers.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 34-25 advantage, Minot State went on an 8-0 run with 4:33 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Dunfee, to increase its lead to 42-25. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 44-29 advantage. Minot State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 44 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 88-68 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 96-68 with 2:43 to go in the contest. The Huskies narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 96-74 win. Minot State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting eight shots from deep to score 24 of its 52 points.
