WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator John Hoeven joined Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) in pressing Department of Homeland (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to release information regarding the department’s plan to secure the U.S. southern border should the Biden administration rescind Title 42, the policy that allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to prohibit entry into the United States to those who pose health risks, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The senators outlined the administration’s failed immigration policies and record high illegal crossings across the nation’s southern border. Hoeven supports the continued use of Title 42, and the administration’s expected reversal of this policy is likely to cause another overwhelming surge of illegal crossings, exacerbating the already massive humanitarian and national security crisis at the southern border.

“The Department should be focused on securing our borders, enforcing all immigration laws and providing all necessary resources to CBP and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and remove all who violate our laws,” the senators wrote. “We request your prompt response… regarding your preparation and plans to deter and respond to the anticipated surge of illegal border crossings.”

The letter was also signed by Senators John Thune (R-S.D.), James Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.).
