The Dakotan:
This is Ag Issues with Neil Roberts.

Neil Roberts:
Welcome to another edition of Ag Issues. Our guest today is NDSU Forage Crop Production Specialist James Rogers from the North Central Research Extension Center. And James, if you're getting calls, a lot of calls. In fact, I prevent Plant Acres. And I know you're telling me that the original plant is really a key factor here, right?

James Rogers:
Yes. Thanks, Neil. Yes. So because of the late spring that we had and the crazy weather conditions, a lot of producers didn't get the crop in that they wanted to plant originally. So now it comes down to what do a plant in lieu of the original crop and is ruined plant to know how that ground was prepared for that original crop and what restrictions that might have on what you can plant moving forward.

Neil Roberts:
All right. Good stuff, James. Thanks for that. And when we come back, we'll talk hail damage.

The Dakotan:
You're listening to Ag Issues with Neil Roberts on the Dakotan Network.

Neil Roberts:
With James Rogers from the North Central Research Center today on Ag Issues. And James, some acres getting blasted with hail across the state. Some advice given this dilemma.

James Rogers:
Well, the first thing they need to do is just assess the damage itself was damaged beyond the point of recovery. And if that was the case, what do you do next? Well, the very first thing you've got to do is look at what herbicides have been applied to that ground and how that's going to affect plant back on the second crop. Or even if you can plant back and what are the grazing and hay harvest restrictions from that herbicide?

Neil Roberts:
And we're only in June. Right. So hang on folks.

James Rogers:
Yes, we're running out of time here. They're still some options. There are some options for maybe some warm season annual grasses. But again, you have to know what the herbicide restrictions are on that previous crop.

Neil Roberts:
All right. Good stuff, James. Thanks for that. And I will bring this report to a close until next time, I'm Niel Roberts.

The Dakotan:
You're listening to the Dakotan Network. Real. Honest. Local news.
