FARGO – A grassroots workshop aimed at providing information to those interested in the political process is scheduled for Feb. 1 in Fargo. It is being sponsored by Fargo Grassroots and is similar to ones held in Bismarck earlier in January.
The workshop is designed to help those new to, or curious about the political process and wanting to get involved. It will cover topics such as legislative districts and the reorganization process, the importance of District Endorsing Conventions, how to participate in the state convention, and political opportunities from the ground up.
Speakers include Jared Hendrix, chairman of District 38 Republicans, Minot; Rep. Jim Kasper, R-Dis. 46, Fargo; and Rep. Cole Christensen, R-Dis. 24, Valley City.
The event will begin with a meet and mingle social with light refreshments from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The training runs from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The cost is $10 for early registration, and $15 at the door. The early registration deadline is January 30th.
"Because of the political power of the NDGOP, regular grassroots North Dakotans need to be trained in how to effectively operate within this apparatus. Conservative patriots, if they care about the direction of the country, must learn to operate the levers of political power in the state," Hendrix said.
Adding to this increase in grassroots activity is the interest in this year's elections. This year there will be several key state-wide elections, most notably Secretary of State and Attorney General. Both posts are currently held by Republicans who are not seeking re-election.
There are also several legislative districts up for grabs. Both the Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner, R-Dis. 37, Dickinson, and the House Majority Leader Chet Pollert, R-Dis. 29, Carrington, as well as Rep. Rick Becker, R-Dis. 7, Bismarck, are all stepping down in this election cycle.
Noting that the Republicans hold a super majority in the state legislature, and every statewide elected office, Hendrix said, “The question is what are we doing with all of this political power? We can hold onto power for the sake of itself, or we can use our position, with support from the party apparatus, to actually advance the principles that we believe in."
