TIOGA--Tioga and surrounding area residents have the opportunity to be taking part in specially designed workforce development classes offered by University of Mary. The monthly classes began in June and run through December. They are being offered in conjunction with the Tioga Economic Development Council (EDC) for the reduced cost of $50.
“They [Tioga EDC] have upped their participation to extend into next year,” said Dr. Robert Martin, senior curriculum design specialist for University of Mary Workforce Development Department. “There will be at least three additional classes held in January, February and March of ’22.”

The classes have covered topics such as “Navigating Your Way Through Conflict,” "Manage Your Brand by Managing Your Message,” “5 Dysfunctions of a Team,” “Do Better Through Performance Management,” “Gold Standard Customer Service,” and “Empowering Colleagues Through Professional Growth.” The class on Dec. 15 will address “Peer to Manager: Peer Today, Supervisor Tomorrow.” The classes were designed for convenience, allowing people to take one class or all to fit their needs and schedule.

Martin has an extensive background in education including stints at Minot High School as well as small-town experience in Turtle Lake/Mercer. He is now a Workforce Development Specialist at the University of Mary. “Workforce development is such an interesting thing right now with the landscape. We have far too many jobs and not enough people to fill them,” said Dr. Martin. “We have been working on this for quite a while for Tioga and the surrounding area. We worked with the EDC to figure out just what would add value to the community as far as workforce training opportunities,” continued Dr. Martin. He said he would have liked more attendance. “Of course, having every seat filled is ideal. But hopefully we can get a footprint here and more people will attend.”
