The Dakotan:

And now time for this week's edition of Ranching Issues. Here's Neil Roberts.

Neil Roberts:

Welcome to another edition of Ranching Issues. Our guest today is Extension Forage Crop Specialist James Rogers from the North Central Research Center. And James, welcome to North Dakota. You're new to this industry position. Tell us about your background.

James Rogers:

Thank you. And I'm really excited and happy to be here. And I came up here from Oklahoma. I worked at a foundation there called Noble Foundation. In, and we were about 30 miles north of the Red River in southern Oklahoma. And I worked as a pastor and range consultant, worked with producers in that region, spent a lot of time working with them on their grazing systems, both introduce forages and native range. And then I transitioned over into applied research. And the research work that I did there focused mainly on stock for cattle and those grazing systems. So we grazed a lot of stock of cattle on wheat and then I came in and began to look at cover crops complementing our winter pasture with a summer cover crop. And I was looking at the soil health effects of adding that cobra crop into the total system. So we were trying to really understand the effect of the cover crop on soil health. The interaction between the plant, the animal, the soil and the economics.

Neil Roberts:

All right. Good stuff, James. And we'll have more on that when we come back.
