Driver No. 1: Jesse Ortiz Jr; Male 23 YOA; Dickinson, ND. Injured

Vehicle No. 2: 2001 Chevrolet 2500 Silverado
Driver No. 2: Dylan Berger; Male 22 YOA; Dickinson, ND. Fatality

NARRATIVE: Vehicle 2, driven by Berger, was southbound on State Ave N
approaching the intersection of 34th St SW at an unknown speed. Berger failed to stop
at the stop sign controlled intersection of 34th St SW and State Ave N. Vehicle 1, driven
by Ortiz, was westbound on 34th St SW and approaching the intersection of State Ave N.
Ortiz did not have time to react to Berger running the stop sign and struck Berger’s
Chevy pickup in the driver’s side door. Both vehicles ran off the roadway. Berger’s
vehicle rolled, ejecting Berger. Both drivers were transported to St. Alexius ER in
Dickinson. Berger was flown to Bismarck via helicopter where he later died due to
severe injuries sustained in the crash. This crash is still under investigation by the North
Dakota Highway Patrol and Dickinson Police Department.

When: 09/02/2022 approximately 1013 hours CST
Road Conditions: Good
Weather Conditions: Clear, Sunny
Crash Involvement: Two vehicle Motorcycle vs Semi
Type of Crash: Right angle collision
Agencies Involved: NDHP, Williams County Sheriff’s Office, Grenora Fire, and Grenora
Vehicle No. 1: 2006 Honda Motorcycle
Driver No. 1: 18 year old male, Zahl, ND, Fatality
Restraints: Helmet in use
Charges: N/A
Vehicle No. 2: 2013 Freightliner Semi
Driver No. 2: 30 year old male, Scobey, MT, uninjured
Restraints: Seat belt
NARRATIVE: The motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 near Zahl. A semi
was turning left onto Highway 50 from 139th Ave NW. The motorcycle struck the trailer of the
semi as the semi was making its turn to go westbound. The driver of the motorcycle was
pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
The names will be released pending notification of next of kin.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
