The Dakotan:
This is Outdoor Issues with Neil Roberts and North Dakota Game and fish outreach biologist Greg Gullickson.

Neil Roberts:
Great, your department does a lot of surveys for anglers and this is the time of year some of those are getting out, right?

Greg Gullickson:
Yeah, that's right. We do have a new one going on right now. And this is on the Red River in the North Dakota game and Fish Department along with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be conducting an Angler survey on the Red River this summer. And the Game and Fish Department does a lot of surveys and from creel surveys seeing how your day went to aquatic nuisance species, check the open to catch a tagged walleye out there reporting them. That information is really important. One of the things that we're going to be doing is running this survey specifically on the Red River that that'll run from May through the end of September. But if you happen to run across a creel clerk anywhere across North Dakota, it's just a few quick minutes. And it really helps our department to determine how the status of the fisheries is going and how our angling public is using those resources and what they think about it. One new twist this year, the anglers will distribute cards to shore anglers and leave cards on vehicles or boats of anglers. So you can simply scan that QR code or log onto the game and Fish Department website and do it online so you don't have to take the time out in the field to do that interview as well.

Neil Roberts:
Good stuff, Greg. Hey, more on fishing when we come back.

Neil Roberts:
Tackling fishing today on outdoor issues. And Greg, how important are these surveys, especially when it comes to managing.

Greg Gullickson:
A lot of different things going to play is what anglers are catching the way that their day is going out there, how long they spent fishing, the number of various species that they were caught and how many they were harvested versus how many they released, and just kind of asking how their game is going. These surveys are really important for us to know what you, the angling public, think of the different lakes that you're being surveyed at.

Neil Roberts:
Excellent stuff, as always. And hey, that brings this report to a close. If you missed one, check up on the website, outdoorissues.com. Until next time. I'm Neil Roberts..
