This is Ag Issues with Neil Roberts.

Neil Roberts:
Welcome to another edition of Ag Issues. Our guest this week is industry crop protection specialist TJ Prochaska from the Central Research Extension Center. And scouting for bugs will soon become important for growers. In fact, it may already be here, right?

TJ Prochaska:
That's absolutely right. We had our first detection of canopy beetle here this week, so scouting may already come a point as we look into the early spring insects. Of course, canola flea beetle and even grasshoppers may actually take center focus for the next few weeks. But we don't necessarily want to stop there. We oftentimes think of scouting and connect it with our pest insects, but are beneficial insects and understanding what populations that may be in the field site will be very important piece to your IPM or integrated pest management toolbox.

Neil Roberts:
All right. Good stuff, T.J.. And hey, we'll have more on scouting for insects when we come back.

Neil Roberts:
Talking Scouting for insects with TJ Prochaska today on Ag Issues. And T.J., what are some of the beneficial bugs to watch for.

TJ Prochaska:
Over the last few weeks, I've actually been taking some phone calls on one of these, and that's going to be the ladybug, the ladybug we've talked about in the past, coming indoors, seeking work from the overnight temperatures. But we're now getting to that moderate temperatures on where they'll be going to hang outside more. Ladybugs are great for controlling things like aphids, whiteflies and even mites in some cases. A couple other examples might you include that of the green or Bramley swing and that some pests of canola free beetle. This may include the leaf swinging itself to guide bugs and the western damsel bug, as we said earlier. Can all the flea beetles already out and about? So helping control some of these numbers, allowing the beneficial population to expand will be key.

Neil Roberts:
All right. Good stuff, T.J. And that will bring this report to a close. If you miss one, check us on the Website, agissues.com. Until next time. I'm Neil Roberts.
