This is Ag Issues with Neil Roberts.

Neil Roberts:

Welcome to another edition of Ag Issues. Our guest this week is NDSU Cropping System Specialist Leo Bartolon from the North Central Research Extension Center. And Leo. Of course, the big storm rolled across the Dakotas here last week, hitting western North Dakota the most. This will definitely impact planting dates for many growers. Will or not?

Leo Bartolon:

Yes, Neil, the blizzard brought so much needed moisture for our region, but also it plays an important role on delay in planting date. So for our region, the best planting day for small grains is from last week of April and our last planting date is last week or May. So some adjustments we need to do to get the best crop in this scenario.

Neil Roberts:

Okay. Good stuff, Leo. And he will have more on spring planting and cedar. When we come back, The Dakotan:

Neil Roberts:

Talking spring planting following a blizzard with Leo Bartolon. And Leo, how may this affect Cedar as we get pushback back here this spring?

Leo Bartolon:

Right. Since our planting day, we're pushing a little further into the last week, probably going to start the more movement in the first week of May, which is out of our optimum week. So we typically put 1.25 million plants per acre. So farmers should consider after the optimum planting date, consider increase in seed rate 1%. But take a look to do not exceed 1.6 million plants per acre. It's the maximum for small grains and a lot of resources can be found at the end. Neil Roberts:

All right. Good stuff, Leo. Thanks for that. And that will bring this report to a close. Hey, if you missed one, catch us on the website agissues.com. Until next time, I'm Neil Roberts.
