MINOT – Public works is not an easy job, but Minot’s director has it down after 16 years of working in that department.

Dan Jonasson, originally from Milton in northeast North Dakota, has lived in Minot since September of 2006, when he was first employed as assistant public works director. In 2012, he became the director.

As public works director, Jonasson oversees 11 departments, including street, storm, sewer, water, landfill, sanitation, transit, and more.

“I’ve got great helpers,” said Jonasson. “Super superintendents, probably some of the best ones I’ve had to take care of all of the departments.”

Jonasson said Jason Sorenson, assistant public works director, does a tremendous job taking care of a lot of the day to day operations.

Off the job, Jonasson described what he likes to do for fun.

“I do a lot of fishing,” said Jonasson. “I’ve got a fishing boat and a lake place down in Van Hook. I do a lot of hunting. I have old cars for hobbies.”

Jonasson said many years ago, moving to Minot wasn’t on his mind.

“This job in Minot is the longest I’ve had in my career,” said Jonasson. “I love Minot. I wouldn’t change it or trade it for any other place in the state.”
