Crash Involvement: Vehicle vs Pedestrian  

Type of Crash: Fatal  

Agencies Involved: North Dakota Highway Patrol, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Sanford Ambulance, Cass County Coroner’s Office  

Vehicle No. 1: 2014 Chevy Malibu  

Driver No. 1: 20-year-old male, not injured  

Restraints: seatbelt  

Charges: No charges were filed  

Passenger No. 1: 20-year-old female, not injured  

Restraints: seatbelt  

Pedestrian: 19-year-old female 

 Injury: Fatal  

NARRATIVE: A Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south on I-29 in the left lane of the two southbound lanes. The 20-year-old male driver observed a pedestrian standing in the left lane. The driver braked and steered left but struck the pedestrian. The Chevrolet entered the median and became stuck in the snow.  

After being struck by the Chevrolet, the pedestrian was thrown and came to rest across the right lane and outside shoulder. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene. The driver and passenger in the Chevrolet were not injured.  

The I-29 south bound lanes from mm 54 to 50 were closed for approximately three hours due to the fatal crash.  

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
