Working for the County

MINOT – Numbers and math aren’t everyone’s strong suit, but some people love it.

Sarah Walker has been an account technician for the Ward County Auditor and Treasurer’s office for six years. Her job deals with property databases and transferring deeds with the recorder’s office to make sure taxes are paid.

“I’m also the foreclosure person,” said Walker. “That probably isn’t my favorite part of the deed.”

Walker has been working in an office for over 30 years. Though she loves numbers, she says it isn’t her favorite thing.

Walker lived in Minot from 2008 to 2012 and moved to Denver. She moved back in November of 2016 to take care of her mom.

“She passed away,” said Walker. “I ended up buying a condo and staying.”

Though Walker’s family is in Minot, she does miss Denver.

“I’m a big city girl, but I like it here,” said Walker. “I have family here and some good friends. I can go visit Denver when I want.”

Walker loves what is going on downtown with unique and local businesses as opposed to chains.

“Just to have some different businesses is really encouraging,” said Walker. “There for a while it was like we don’t have a unique restaurant here you know? It’s really fun to have some new places. I feel like we’re getting more diverse in that way. I like little shops that have unique gifts.”

When she’s not at the office, Walker likes to read.

“I’m ridiculous, I love music,” Walker laughed. “I just like to be out and about with people. That’s one thing about this job that I like is that there’s consumer interaction. We deal with people who don’t want to pay their taxes, who don’t like what’s going on with elections. For me it’s a big challenge to kind of bring them down and help them out. I would say that’s my favorite thing about this job.”
