Two-Vehicles Involved 

What: Fatality Crash 

Where: I-94 MM 201, 1 mile east of Steele 

When: 10/20/22 at 9:00 p.m.  

Road Conditions: Normal  

Weather Conditions: Clear 

Crash Involvement: Two Vehicles 

Type of Crash: Rear-end 

Agencies Involved: NDHP, Kidder County SO, Steele PD, Kidder County Fire, Kidder County 

Ambulance, Sanford Air Med 

Vehicle No. 1: 1999 GMC Yukon 

Driver No. 1: Donavan Wick, 64 years old, Steele, ND, Not Injured 

Restraints: Seatbelt not in use 

Charges: Under Investigation 

Vehicle No. 2: 2005 Chevy Silverado pulling horse trailer 

Driver No. 2: Steve Maier, 64 years old, Bismarck, ND, Fatal Injuries 

Restraints: Seatbelt not in use 

NARRATIVE: Donavan Wick was traveling westbound from a rural residence to Steele.  

Steve Maier was traveling westbound from Wishek to Mandan. Maier was pulling a horse  

trailer loaded with ten cows. Both vehicles were traveling in the right lane when Wick’s vehicle 

struck the rear of the horse trailer. The impact pushed the Chevy Silverado and horse trailer  

into the median where they rolled over.  

Steve Maier was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Steve Maier was  

transported from the scene by the Kidder County Ambulance and later pronounced dead from  

injuries sustained in the crash. Donavan Wick was not injured in the crash. Four of the ten  

cows sustained fatal injuries in the crash. This crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
