Work Plan Also Advances Utility Project in Wilton, Recreation Improvements around Lake Sakakawea

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator John Hoeven, R-ND, today announced that he helped secure important North Dakota priorities in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 work plan, including $136.5 million to complete the Pipestem Dam safety modification project. As a member of the Senate Energy and Water Development Appropriations Committee, Hoeven has been working with the Corps to ensure the project continues to be funded in the annual work plan and to keep it on schedule. This funding comes in addition to the $40 million award that Hoeven secured for the project last year.

“Improvements are currently underway to help prevent erosion at the Pipestem Dam. This funding will help keep this important project on schedule, ensuring the dam can continue to effectively prevent flooding in the Jamestown region,” said Hoeven. “This is part of our broader efforts to help North Dakota communities manage their water resources and improve opportunities for recreation, including around Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe.”

In addition, the FY22 work plan:

  • Includes $1 million for the Wilton Street and Utility Improvement Project.
    • The project is funded through the Corps’ Section 594 Program for small and rural communities, which Hoeven works to fund each year to support water and sewer facilities updates in rural North Dakota.
  • Prioritizes improvements to the East Totten Trail Recreation Area within the Garrison Dam operations and maintenance budget.
    • This is consistent with Hoeven’s ongoing efforts to ensure the Corps improves the recreation areas, including repairs for boat ramps to ensure lake access, around Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe.
